Bible Tabs- for ME

#18 in the Bible Marginalia Series

Keep the Faith
Deuteronomy 4:9
Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself,
lest you forget the things your eyes have seen,
and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.
And teach them to your children and your grandchildren.

So, the reality is.....
I know where the books of the Bible are....
but have a hard time recalling
specific verses when I need them.
So this past summer,
I began the project of adding tabs
to my Bible that highlight favorite key verses for me.
Key words that bring forward a main idea.
It started without a BIG plan
on how this would work out.
AND I lOVE IT.

His Mercy-
1 Chronicles 16:34
Oh, Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!
For His mercy endures forever.

Our Refuge
Psalm 46:1
God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.

Unsearchable Things

Jeremiah 33:3
Call to Me, and I will answer you,
and show you great and might things,
which you do not know.

Taking the Bible I have been using
for almost 20 years and continuing
the journey of my life meeting
in His Word.

Tools-
 This punch makes the tabs-
used card stock.
This is a McGill file tab punch-
can't seem to find this very one.
But, here is a similar one-
File Tab Punch

Assorted washi tape makes the thin paper
a bit more sturdy to add the tabs-
with the Tim Holtz- tiny attacher.

Bible Marginalia- The J.S. Bach Bible

#15 in the Bible Marginalia Series

In her book Writing in the Margins,
Lisa Hickman recounts this wonderful story
 of Bible Marginalia.

" In the 1830's Leonard Reichle's ancestors purchased
a pile of old books in Philadelphia, one of them a Bible.
A century later Reichle shared his family treasure
with a visiting cousin, Lutheran pastor Christian Reidel.
Upon opening the Bible, Reidel recognized the signature
of a famous musician: Johann Sebastian Bach.
Throughout the Bible more than three hundred marks
in the text call attention to underlined passages,
marks of emphasis, and statements written in the margins.
Occasionally, the marginalia named
a typographical or grammatical error.
More often, the marginalia revealed notations
linking text to lyrical insights and music.
More than one thousand works for
 chorus and instruments
find their genesis somewhere in Bach's Bible between
Genesis and Revelation.
The Calov Bible, as this Bible came to be called,
shows more than three hundred
 touch points of musical inspiration.
After being discovered by a pastor visiting his cousin,
Bach's Bible now resides at the
Concordia Seminary Library in St. Louis. (Missouri)

The Bible was a three-volume Bible
of the seventeenth century that also contains
 commentary by Martin Luther
as well as theological reflections from a professor, Abraham Calovius."
p. 58-59

The Calov Bible was made famous with the discovery of this long-lost copy
that had once belonged to the composer Johann Sebastian Bach
At the time of his death, the inventory of Bach's library specified
ownership of Calovii Schriften (writings of Calovius).
It was not known until the 20th century what these writings were.

A bit more of the story here-Bach-Bible

The main point that Hickman brings forward
is that it was in the margins of his Bible
where Bach struggled with his world
meeting the WORD.
He made notes for his thinking
 about music and God's Word.
In this space a genius mind
 worked out the scriptural discipline
and his life calling-his vocation.
It is where a sacred song was written.

Though it is unlikely our Bibles
will be kept in a rare book library someday,
they certainly can be a blessing
to the generations to come after us. May each mark in our own Bibles
signal the strokes of our own time of
worship of our Creator God.

(Concordia Seminary is where my husband graduated from,
and was blessed to see this Bible
in the rare book library there in St. Louis.)

Bible Marginalia- to the ends of the Earth

#14 in the Bible Marginalia Series

"I have made you a light for the Gentiles,
that you may bring salvation to the end of the earth.
....and they began rejoicing,
and glorifying the word of the Lord,
and as many as were appointed
 to eternal life believed.
And the word of the Lord was spreading
throughout the whole region."
Act 13: 47-49

Bible Marginalia- Amazing Grace

#12 in the Bible Marginalia Series

1 Peter 3: 21

The flood is a figure of Baptism.
in each case, water saves.
The world was cleansed when Noah
and his family were lifted up by the flood.
Baptism cleanses us and raises us to new life.
By grace, Baptism is a means of salvation
through which the Holy Spirit produces faith.
We are forgiven and holy because of Christ.
That forgiveness is applied to us in Baptism.
The life we are given in Baptism
 was earned by Christ.

Evelyn Seidel's Valentines- the rest of the story

On a busy day in Greensboro, NC,
rushing from one event to another
at a Church Worker's Conference,
I took a break to check email
and found a comment on a blog post from
Feb. 14, 2013.
You need to read the first part
of this story for the following to make sense.

The story about Evelyn Seidel's Valentines
and also the story of Alice Jean Seidel's Valentines.
It is the story continued from Alice's daughter-
 Gail, that I tell here.

I talked with Gail by phone today,
 and recounted the story
told on the previous blog post.
I had her family history correct.
The lost family has been found.
More of the story here:

Gail and I were both there at that auction
in Kendallville, Indiana, in the Spring of 1980,
both with misty eyes and grieving hearts.

I was just a couple months past the death
of my first husband, Larry.
Gail was there with her mother, Alice Jean.
Gail was there by her mother's side-
the day so vivid in memory,
 she still remembers the shirt
a family memory wore that day.
Notes from my online research- a year and half ago

I could not believe that somehow
 the box of beautiful Valentines
was mine with a bid.
I vowed to carefully protect the treasure-
the sentimental value.
The pieces of love and affection
both handmade and store-bought- given as tokens
to mark time and place in the calendars of our lives,
stamped with LOVE.

Gail has three siblings- David, Edward and Carolyn.
Edward is a computer programmer,
and on a whim one day-Goggled his aunt-
Evelyn Seidel - Married to Ralph Lamp.
Up came the blog post about the Valentines.
And the story went to family members.

Gail- just a couple of years my senior-
lives in Ft Wayne, Indiana-
 my home stomping grounds.
Lutheran stock.
Ft. Wayne Lutheran heritage.

Some of the Valentines are now part of
Heart Day celebrations
in the homes of adult daughters-
as this box became their treasured Valentine stories.

But, I have carefully sorted out the Valentines
in the silver box labeled -
 Alice Jean Seidel.
And also some of Evelyn's-
for Gail to distribute as she desires.

They have been lovingly
set in a box to mail to Gail.
To keep or distribute to family members.

Thirty-four years waiting for the rest of the story.
Reunited with family.
And as we touched lives together with a phone call,
we both could not help but notice the God-designed plan.
He has so carefully marked the details of our lives-
to bring Him Glory.

And so we sing-
Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Bible Marginalia- For "NON- ARTISTS"

#11 in the Bible Marginalia Series

The basic principle of Bible Marginalia
is that this is intended to be process-driven
 rather than end-product evaluated.
Much of my teaching is done
to help EVERYONE participate-
 regardless of "artistic experience",
 artistic ability,
and materials available.
So I am always trying out a variety
of ways to draw people to the
Scriptural Practice of Bible Marginalia.
Commonly found materials, ease of use,
and adaptability
are criteria I use for trying out new possibilities.

4x6 or even 3x5 graph index cards
make lettering and design work easy
They can be added in with washi tape
 to a regular Bible
or cut to size for a wide-margin Bible.

There are many choices of graphic design
 coloring books from Dover Publications.
The pages can be cut into 4x6 cards
to have a design already on the page
and then notes and journaling can be added.
This was added in with washi tape.
Dover Publications offers some great choices
 for pages for Bible Journaling.

http://store.doverpublications.com/0486475468.html
There are also many boards on Pinterest
that have free downloadable coloring pages.

You can't go wrong with your
favorite color palette sample
from your local Home Design store.
Pick up a few color charts when you stop by,
and cut to size for a wide-margin Bible.
Simply add the words that help in your study.
Can also be stamped with simple designs.

This study needed a simple way
to list the Ten commandments.
Knew I would never get this
done in the space provided-
so simply typed them up on the computer,
figured out the font size that worked, and printed.
Helps if you are teaching in a group setting
and all can easily add this in
 with their own unique touch.
(I know that numbering systems change
 in denominations-
this list taken from Martin Luther's Small Catechism)
So, don't let the "standards" of your
artistic talent keep you from participating.
Try a way that might work for you-
and join in the practice of
Scriptural Journaling.
