Lenten Practices- Along the Way

I have been doing a Lenten calendar
 journey every year since 2011.
Always interesting to SEE
where the journey takes me.
My challenge this year-
I have 3 calendars I wanted to use,
AND
3 Lenten devotionals that I wanted to read.
This choice is with a Missional focus.
Find it here:
I like the Creative Communication
 Publications each year.
Our church always has a selection
 to choose from for Lent.
Rev. Paul L. Maier is a very respected
 ancient history professor
in the Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod
and this was an easy choice.
Find it here:
Lent Creative Communications- Maier
I always say YES to C.S. Lewis.
 So there you have it.
Done deal.
I pick out 4 colored pencils
that I will use for each calendar.
Put each set in a page protector
 to keep things together.
I may sit down at different times
in the day to Read, Reflect and Respond-
to SEE how God's Word
will Reach into my day and life.
Or I may have a longer space
of time and do the readings
 in the same time frame.

I have also been searching out other
Visual Faith resources
to have on hand to share,
and show at gatherings.
I like this book of images.
They are ready to color, and
perhaps a bit more non-gendered
 than some Coloring books.
My approach to using coloring books?
It doesn't have to be done in one season.
It could be prayed over, colored in and completed
 over a number of seasons.
 Journey collected over time....

Lent Illustrated would work for a more
traditional approach
with a Bible Journaling application.
This also has some basic helps for beginners.
A good choice for a group.
Lent-Illustrated

Illustrated Children's Ministry
is fairly new on the Visual Faith scene
 and they create products
 for church and family settings.
I like the graphic dynamic of their images
and also work as a more non-gendered option.
This set of  8 1/2 by 11 coloring pages for the
Stations of the Cross comes as a downloadable set.
Pretty reasonable for 100 copies for $10.
Always good to make sure you give credit
and due for the work of the artist.
Thanks Adam Walker Cleveland.
This set is here:

So we are a few days into Lent-
and it is not too late.
Pray about where you might want to focus.
And remember-
 that GRACE
covers all of these practices and experiments.
Get behind?
Start again, catch up and move forward.
 You can do THAT
as many times as you need to!
Blessed Lent to you!

 You can get these calendars
and more in the FILES section of the

Bible Marginalia- Comings and Goings

Bible Marginalia Series- #243

Psalm 121: 7-8
"The Lord will keep you from all evil;
he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out
 and your coming in
from this time forth and forevermore."

Sometimes in a day of rushing here
 and there,
it is easy to think that
I manage the ins and outs of a day.
Perhaps when it is going well-
I'll take credit for that.
Then when it is not...
that might be my doing too.
But, above all of this,
is this promise above....
in ALL,
forever
and evermore-
the Lord
KEEPS ME.

to our heavenly home...
the path Jesus took...
how am I following...

Bible Marginalia- A New Thing

Bible Marginalia Series- #241

Psalm 43:18-19
"Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?"

Visiting the Margin Madness
 event at Burke Community Church
 in Burke, VA.
The process was to write
former challenges,
and life set backs on a piece of tissue paper.
Then we tore it into flower petal
shapes and pieced it back together.
Simple and effective process to reflect on the
NEW CREATION.
Springing forth.
The former old things are past-
a new thing has arrived.
And it is good.

Supplies:
Tissue paper
Fine-point non-bleeding Sharpie pen
Watercolors
Colored pencils

Bible Marginalia- Be Doers

Bible Marginalia Series- #240

James 1:22
"But be doers of the word,
and not hearers only...."

Still thinking about this alot lately.
Easier said than done.
More complicated than it looks.
Needing to pray about this one..
Oh, Lord,
may it be that my heart
is softened to move to action.
May I find passive listening
 to be offensive.
May I see what breaks your heart
 and be moved to answer.
May I DO- when I need to.
Amen.

Bible Marginalia Series-Listening and Doing

Bible Marginalia Series-#239

James 1:19-22
Oh, been thinking a lot about listening.
To each other.
And what happens when we don't.
So driven to have our
own opinion made KNOWN-
we just keep on talking, and talking.
Praying for quick listening-
jumping right in and being quiet.
Then slow words-
thoughtful reflection.
And when we don't agree-
slow to anger.
Or how about no anger?

Then the other side of listening?
That doing part?
Like when your kids say- ya, ya, ya-
to a request.
And you have a feeling there was
no intention of actually DOING IT.

I am pretty sure that my heavenly Father
has had to be slow to anger with Me,
 and my ya, ya -
Listening without the effort
 put forward of actually-
DOING IT.

Oh, Lord, turn my listening into action.
Give me courage to be slow when needed.
And heaven help me to be quick
 when I need to be.
Amen.

First Birthday Party- Levi Michael

Levi Michael is ONE.
His momma planned
a wild animal party.
And decided it would work best
to host it at Papa and Gigi's house.
She found cute party hats.
Animals were growling
and roaring at Target
that they wanted to join the party.
 They got little hats too.
  She found photos of Levi
for each month of his first year.
She painted jar lids and little animals
 with white paint
and filled them with animal crackers.
 She gathered healthy snacks
for the young ones and toddlers.
A Costco sheet cake got sprinkles galore.
And a small SMASH cake from the grocery store.
Stuffed animals held court and
whispered secrets to Levi.
Levi's Granny had a banner made,
and we made the lemonade.
The balloons arrived,
and the high chair was high-fives.
Yea- we kinda knew the name of the
young man of the hour.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50
 people were invited.
And they all came.
They flew in from New York and Orlando.
They drove from Fredericksburg and Frederick.
Levi celebrated at day care.
With his friends right there.
Little man we give thanks,
you have stolen our hearts.
