Worship into the Week- Ash Wednesday

Worship into the Week- Ash Wednesday
Psalm 51: 1-19
Create a Clean Heart in Me, O God

We come with our list of realities:
transgressions, iniquity, sin, evil.
But that isn't the end of our story.
You replace all of that with a new washing,
making clean, and a restoration.
I have grown up with this passage as liturgy:

"Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence,
and take not your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and uphold me with a willing spirit."

It speaks to my spiritual formation
and I appreciate the recentering
for this year's Ash Wednesday
and the beginning of Lent 2023.

Worship into the Week- Something More Sure

Worship into the Week-

Christ's Glory and the Prophetic Word

2 Peter 1:16-21

Apostle Peter is nearing the end of his life and ministry

and his goal is to remind the church

of where they stand and what they believe.

Faith is a living and vibrant part of their lives-

not stale, faint, or dead.

But, remember....

God's power grants all things for our life.

Jesus is Coming AGAIN.

Peter was an eyewitness of his majesty.

Jesus is God's Son.

Don't forget that it is the merits of Christ

 that make us Righteous.

The Bible is God's very own words-

we have something more sure than stories.

God's Word is like a lamp that shows us the way-

PAY ATTENTION.

Ash Wednesday 2023

Gathering supplies for  Lent this year.

Still deciding my approach and the journey.

It will be interactive, responsive,

with mixed media.

Visual Faith Ministry has many new things

 for Lent this year.

www.visualfaithmin.org.

Spotted this at a Doctor's office today.

The bright yellow hope of Spring still tangled

in the stark brown and dead looking bush branches.

That is really the story of Lent.

Living with the barren

amidst the hope of new life.

This cross is in the caves of St. Jerome

under the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.

He lived here in this place for years

to translate the Vulgate Bible.

This image is a certain reminder

of our Lenten journey.

Up to Jerusalem and to the cross -

ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Worship into the Week- Plant, Water, Grow

Worship into the Week-
1 Corinthians 3:1-9
Divisions in the Church

Wherever humans are involved in ministry,
the relationship part causes stress and challenge.
We won't get this "teaming" part
put together this side of heaven.
Yet, it is a helpful framework
when we understand how the
partnership is designed to work.
There are those who begin-"plant".
Then there are those who water- "sprout and reach."
Then there is the growth-that is God's doing
Each team person has a part in the ministry.
Each are called to do their part.
None are more important than the other.

The early church was racked with the
partiality of people to their leader.
We see the same thing in ministry today.
Division always hurts all.
Division does not allow the
furthering of God's Kingdom.
Each person will get their due reward.
v.9 "For we are God's fellow workers.
You are God's field, God's building.
We must pray to have a mindset of unity
that allows all to work for the common purpose
of proclaiming that the Kingdom is near.

Jerusalem the Golden

Morning light hits the pale limestone
of the buildings in Jerusalem.
Jerusalem stone is a name applied to
various types of pale limestone,
dolomite and dolomitic limestone.
This is common in and around Jerusalem
and has been a building material since ancient times.

I had heard of Jerusalem the Golden
but in 8 trips to Israel -
just had never quite seen the transformation.

Either we came into the city too late to see,
cloudy or rainy days obscured the light,
or maybe my hotel room
was on the wrong side to witness the event.
I have heard that sunset can do the
very same thing as this morning glow.

Meleke, the "royal" stone is a white,
coarse crystalline limestone
and has been used in buildings like the Western Wall
and other parts of the Herodian Temple.
It is easy to quarry, but exposure to air causes it to harden
and develop the characteristic pale yellow hue.

The original Herodian stone on the Southern Steps
dates back to the time of Jesus.

There is something about the
streets of Jerusalem.
The narrow streets, the wide stairs
 and the cart ramps.
The laid stone that is the same
as the walls of the buildings.
Jerusalem the Golden-
you are truly a unique and beautiful city.

Worship into the Week- Nothing but Jesus

Worship into the Week
1 Corinthians 2:1-16
Proclaiming Christ Crucified
Wisdom from the Spirit

Sharing a faith story doesn't need to have
fancy words or come from people
 with fancy education degrees.
When the Holy Spirt dwells in His people
we are supplied with the truths
 of wisdom to share.
We cannot understand the mind of God,
we don't have that ability.
Any ministry in the name of Jesus
is a cross shaped ministry.
All the gifts we have to carry out this ministry
are given by the Holy Spirit.
We give thanks for this equipping of God's people
for His work in the world.

Worship into the week- God's Gifts

Worship into the Week-
Matthew 5:1-12
The Sermon on the Mount
The Beatitudes
These few verses of Scripture turn the world
of the followers of Jesus upside down.
The Kingdom of heaven was not a gift
held out only to the pious,
 righteous religious leaders,
but to the lowly and outcast.
Jesus lifts up things like mercy, peace, pure in heart,
the meek, the persecuted, and the reviled.
Yesterday I stood on this very same hill (probably)
by the Sea of Galilee.
Listening to these controversial
and "against the culture"
 of the day words.
Jesus brought hope to the crowds of people.
These same words bring me HOPE.
So many times I might feel
down and out, when am I going to get a break.
But, then and there.... I can't do it myself.
I need Jesus.  In the very lowest of the low spots,
He steps in.
The Kingdom Comes.
The Mount of Beatitudes- Israel
Adults huddled here listening to every word-
 nearly 2000 years later.
As I read the words slowly, carefully, thoughtfully.
They speak right to me- even today.
Jesus is near.
