St. Augustine- The Churches

St. Augustine, Florida-
the oldest city in the United States.
Some beautiful churches in this city.

Worship niches.
a bit of Ireland
and we remember our Baptism

a chance to see this Bible at this time

a bit of the history of Grace United Methodist
This church lost part of the top
of the tower during a recent hurricane.

Sacred spaces for worship,
 reflection and prayer.
Always good to find when traveling.

Bible Marginalia- Your Son Will Live

Bible Marginalia Series- #280

Wonder what the downlow
would have been for Jesus on Twitter
after this visit in Cana.
They had seen what he
 had done in Jerusalem.
They were there.
Whenever I read this story,
I can't help but think that this was really
a miracle connected to 2 places.
Jesus was in Cana,
and the royal official's son
 was in Capernaum.
Jesus didn't have to be in the spot
 for the miracle to happen.
Miracle noted for both places.
"Your son will live."
In the follow-up story the official asked
 when his son became "better".
He noted the time.
He had paid attention
to his conversation with Jesus.
Then he and all his household believed.
He was moved to a heart-change.

Oh, Lord,
keep me centered enough
to see and note.
To be aware of all the things
you need to see a heart-change-
IN ME. Amen.

Bible Marginalia- Refreshed

Bible Marginalia Series- #279

Proverbs 11:25
Sometimes I am just running out of steam.
Too much, too often,
and too little of the next thing.
Out of balance.
In some quiet time-
I used a simple prayer card
that I usually color in-
and added it to the page for the reference
 in my interleaved Bible.
Then simply started filling
in the space with doodles.
Traced a couple of circles to get started-
and then sat and drew
 and prayed this verse.
Who was in need of refreshment?
Who did the Holy Spirit need to enrich?
Somehow at then end of this time-
no color-
just plain old black pen on paper
and a quiet calm of refreshment
 was "just there".
Can't ask for more than that-
a simple process-
a refreshing time in prayer - for others-
and I was refreshed too.

Supplies:
Proverbs prayer card
Fine point Sharpie pen- non-bleeding
Washi tape
Colored pencil

Bible Marginalia- Look, Hear, Set your Heart

Bible Marginalia Series-#278

Ezekiel 40:4
In three parts this summons tells
 the prophet the importance
of the communication about to be made.
The Vision of the Temple-
in a challenging passage.

 Sometimes directions
are very simple and direct.
 Though these words
were for the new temple,
 I wonder what might happen
if we took them to heart today.
When life is difficult,
let us bless the Lord that our salvation
does not depend on meeting the difficulty.
Look and see the gift of God's Word,
 and set your heart.
Ezekiel is reminded to give
close attention in order to tell the people.
What do I need to pay close attention to?
Supplies:
Washi tape
IF stamps
Alpha letters
 iridescent watercolors
IF diecuts
 Color pencil
Fine-point Sharpie pen- non bleeding

Texas- Round Top Style

You just might miss Round Top, Texas.
Unless you have read about it in
Country Living magazine
 or antique destination- top picks.
Our day of exploring
also had a few surprises.
Quite unexpected-
the view when we to stepped inside
 the Concert Hall
 for the International Festival Institute
 in Round Top.
The Festival was established in 1971 by pianist
James Dick in Round Top, Texas.
 It provides musical education programs
throughout summer and hosts
 several concerts every year.
Royer's Cafe- will always have a line.
Quirky decor.
The shrimp BLT
and of course the pies-
with Blue Bell ice cream.

 Junk Gypsy
has put Round Top on the must-stop list
for the repurposed mavens of the world.
Maybe a bit more of the
commercial line of shop-fill
than the found and remade items these days.
Twice a year- 100,000 folks descend
on this small town for the Big antique shows.
Hanging our with shopping friends-
 always GOOD!
And you just might have to make a detour
on your way to or from Round Top
to stop at the Blue Bell Ice cream plant.
 Can't beat the big scoop
of your favorite flavor for $1.

Texas- the Witte-Schmid House

The 1860 Witte-Schmid Haus was donated
to the Texas German Society in 1986
by Annie Schmid and her son, Sanford Schmid.
The German fachwerk structure known as "Das Haus"
was listed on the National Register
of Historic Places in December, 1997.
It is located in the Schoenau community
between Industry and Shelby in Austin County, Texas.

The first owner of the house was Dr. Ernst Witte,

a lawyer born in Blomberg, Germany, in 1793.
After a successful career
in law and politics in his native land,
he followed his sons to America,
 and with his wife, Lisette,
bought 1422 acres of land in Texas.
 He turned his attention
to raising cattle and cotton.
Shortly thereafter, the Wittes

began construction on the house,
which reproduced many of the details
of the Wittes' house in Germany.
The structure is of stone and timber,
with two levels and a cellar.
The first level has a sandstone perimeter
 with a stucco finish;
the upper level is faced with clapboard siding.
Interior walls are of half-timber,
 or fachwerk construction
 filled-in with adobe bricks.
Dr. Witte died in 1869 and was buried

in a small cemetery a short distance
southeast of the house.
His wife died in 1883 but was buried at Shelby
 because wet weather
made the road to the
family cemetery impassable.
The house remained in the family
 until December, 1986,
 when it was given to
the Society by Annie Schmid
 and her son Sanford Schmid.
It is an excellent example of
19th century German-Texan construction
and is among the oldest surviving
examples of German architecture
 in Austin County.
(Texas German Society Website)

While in Texas,
we had the chance
 to visit this historic house.
Artifacts include original items
 from the home
and some "period pieces" donated.
 A home that included many
children through the years.
The details show the horsehair
 in the walls upstairs-
 to give strength and stability.
                                                     A gathering to celebrate
 in the "Family HOME"-
and to give thanks for all the blessings
that have been given from the land
 to this hard-working- German-Swiss Family.

Texas Hospitality

 This past week we were
blessed to travel to Texas.
Some beautiful territory in the countryside
a couple hours out of Houston.

A wonderful place to gather
 on a warmer day.
 We were treated to some
very generous hospitality
 by the Harvey family.
 This family has impeccable
down-home Texas style, with a
generous welcoming heart for those who
come to visit.

These arrowheads and artifacts
were all found on the property
during the construction of the ranch house.
Some of the artifacts
have been dated to over 2000 years old.
There is no way I can do justice
to this beautiful ranch in my own photos.
So, I will share what I found
in the book on the coffee table.
(and no, I didn't get the cover or author)

Time to get to know folks a bit.
Relax and get some work done too.
Home on the range at the close of the day,
and a bit of peace in the quiet.
Respite comes in all sorts of ways.
